NEWPORT NEWS, VA, June 21, 2018 – The Executive Director for the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), Michael Giardino will be awarded the Community Service Award from the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). The award ceremony will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota today and Mike is on-hand to accept the award.
According to HLAA, “the Community Service Award was established in 1986, and is presented to HLAA Chapters, State Organizations, or individuals who have undertaken significant outreach projects or efforts that serve the community, by creating awareness, teaching others about hearing loss, as well as the communication obstacles that it can create”. This is the second-time Mike has been honored by HLAA as a member of the Rochester, NY chapter. Mike was previously awarded the 2016 Distinguished Community Person Award, as the Director of Aviation at the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC).
The Greater Rochester International Airport is currently undergoing a $79 million upgrade, with nearly $40 million being awarded from Governor Cuomo’s Upstate Economic and Revitalization Competition. The HLAA’s Community Service Award recognizes Mike’s efforts to include hearing loss technology such as, dynamic lighting, captioned alert systems, additional hearing loops and computer technology into the terminal upgrade project. These efforts will help hearing impaired passengers with communications throughout the terminal building.
“My hope is to foster awareness for the Hearing Loss Association of America, while also implementing innovative technologies to assist the hearing impaired with communications within the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), as I have done in Rochester. Providing excellent customer experiences that remove barriers and creates an innovative space for all, is a top priority of mine” States Mike Giardino, Executive Director.
